Bernard's innovation Journey

Bernard has been on his own journey to understand innovation and entrepreneurship:
Growing up in New Jersey, he collected batteries, flew model rockets, dabbled in electronics, and taught himself photography.
At Holy Cross College, he studied history and physics. During summers he developed an entrepreneurial streak by working at a beach club on the Jersey shore hustling lunch orders and keeping guests happy.
In college, he was on the Fencing Team and his weapon was the epee.
While earning his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania, Bernard decided to study the method and style of inventors such as Thomas Edison and his contemporaries.
His first book explored the work of Elihu Thomson and how his inventions led to the creation of General Electric.
To better understand entrepreneurship,
Bernard spent a year at the Harvard Business School as a postdoctoral fellow.
As a junior professor at University of Virginia [UVa], he collaborated with psychologist Michael Gorman to investigate invention as a cognitive
process. Their research was supported by the National Science Foundation and the Smithsonian Institution.
Bernard became an excellent cook and tried his hand at Chinese brush painting.
Based on his research, Corning Incorporated hired Bernard as a consultant to improve its R&D operations.
In 1997, the Sloan Foundation invited him to write a biography of Nikola Tesla which resulted in an award-winning book that has been published in 11 languages.
He courted and married Jane, a lovely English lady. Together they raised two daughters.
As an academic entrepreneur at UVa, Bernard launched an engineering business minor, then the Technology Entrepreneurship Program, and finally an NSF I-Corps training program.
In 2021, he joined the University of Galway to run the M.Sc. programme in AgInnovation. He has helped over 200 adult learners to develop new products and launch startups.
Jane and Bernard relocated to a cottage in Co Galway with their 3 rescue dogs.
Today, Bernard works with individuals and organizations across Ireland to develop the innovation mindset vital to addressing the challenges of the 21st century.
